The Moving Wall

We visited the Viet Nam Veterans Memorial "Moving Wall" Friday night. It's an 80% scale replica of the memorial in Washington and is an impressive sight. I would strongly urge everyone who can to visit the display while it's here (it will be on display through Saturday at LeClaire Park, downtown Davenport). Whatever your feelings are about Viet Nam, the current war in Iraq, or war in general, this memorial will touch you. It really gives you a greater understanding of the personal sacrifices made by the soldiers & their families in serving our country. Brad & Leo reading names on the wall. Notice the older man in the background--he was wiping tears away. We saw many people like him, and I got choked up every time.
This was a small note & picture left by someone to honor a particular soldier & his unit. There were many similar things left, including flowers. Here's a mother & son taking a "rubbing" of a name on the wall. We saw many younger people doing this, which was wonderful.
A framed memorial left for display. It was really touching to see how much love there was at this memorial. It was wonderful to see people, who might never be able to make the trip to the original memorial in Washington, be able to find the names of their loved ones here.
